Uniform care: As your mothers would have told you always wash the colours separately, we make no exceptions here, the whites with whites and colours with colours. You could try the following as I do, have a bucket of water with some kind of pre wash soaker in it, keep in the laundry and place your white shirts in the bucket when you take them off, when you're ready to wash just empty the bucket, water and all into the washing machine, but this is only a suggestion. Shirts: Wash your shirts as per the instructions on the tag, if you have any stains use a stain remover prior to washing, either a spray or a laundry soap and a little elbow grease, remove your shirts from the machine and dry in the usual manner or try hanging them on hangers to drip dry. Slacks: Wash or dry clean your black pants as per the instructions on the label, if you wash them, with the colours please, remove from the machine and dry in the usual manner or hang them with skirt hangers to drip dry, Iron them as per the instructions on the label but to avoid the shiny patches use an ironing cloth when ironing. Waistcoat: Your vest can be dry cleaned or washed just follow the instructions on the label (for a washing machine free option I've had some success with a bucket of cold water with a small amount of mild detergent let vest soak for a few hours, rinse very well and drip dry) press inside out to avoid those shiny patches or use an ironing cloth. Neck Tie: Your neck tie is dry clean only please follow the instruction on the label (for a wash at home option use the same treatment as for the vest so give it a try *note do not twist or ring out your tie, let it drip dry or press gently between a folded bath towel). Always press your tie under an ironing cloth.
How to keep black Clothes black. Black is a luxurious colour that looks good on everyone. Unfortunately, black clothes often fade from too many washes or improper care. Here are a few ideas that will keep your black black.1. Always use a laundry liquid because powders may leave a powdery residue on you blacks. 2. When shopping for a liquid detergent check the label closely, avoid liquids that contain bleach or promise to brighten your clothes. Look for a liquid detergent that is especially made for washing black like "Radiant wash for black". Consider using an environmentally friendly natural liquid laundry detergent free from most chemicals that cause damage to clothes. 3. Always use cold water, turn your clothes inside out this will protect them from friction damage from the machine, use a gentle cycle to wash or better still wash them by hand. Don't use a fabric softeners they contain ingredients that will cause colour fading. 4. Add a cup of white vinegar to the wash for an old home remedy to preserve the colours in your clothes, if your worried the smell of the vinegar will be washed away. A small amount on salt in the first wash will also help to preserve the colour. 5. After washing hang your blacks on an inside drying rack or hangers out of the sun. Sunlight will do the most damage to your black clothes. Avoid the clothes dryer as the heat will suck the colour out of your clothes. 6. Follow these few simple steps to help keep your blacks blacker. How to Iron a shirt:This has always been a contentious issue and this is just one way of doing it. - Start with the collar and iron flat.
- Next fold the yoke over at the seam with the fold facing you, smooth out flat with the collar standing up then iron.
- To iron the sleeves start with the cuff and iron flat, lay out the sleeve on the board from the seam on the underside of the sleeve, smooth out and iron from the centre crease down to the seam, turn the sleeve over and press the other side, try not adding any new creases to the centre of the sleeve (to do this run the crease between two fingers as you press) repeat the process for the other sleeve.
- To iron the body of the shirt start with the left hand side of the shirt (for a woman's shirt the button side, a man's shirt the button hole side) lay this front on the ironing board and iron working from left to right you may have to move the position of the shirt from time to time to get into those difficult corners, press all over moving the shirt towards you as you go and finish at the right hand side of the shirt.
- Hang the shirt up straight away to avoid creasing (for any stubborn creases or if you have a cotton shirt use a little water spray or spray starch) I have used this method of pressing a shirt and never had to go over to re press any part of the shirt. Happy ironing if this is your thing!
